Here’s the exact 5 day plan I followed 2013:
(Adapted from the Liver Cleanse Protocol over on Detox Expert Jon Barron’s website.)
In preparation of the detox I did 5 days of no dairy, no wheat, no meat, no sugar, coffee or alcohol, eating mainly salads, soups, rice, hummus, beans (more details here)
Liver Cleanse Schedule to Help You Plan Your Self-Guided Detox
Here’s What I Ate & Drunk incl. Supplements:
On Awakening: glass of water
Morning:
- liver tincture with Milkthistle (if using)
- 30 drops of wormwood complex (if using)
- liver flush drink – zinger alarm
(juice 1 orange, 1 lemon, half a thumb size piece of ginger, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 clove of garlic) – leave orange out if you’re at the begin of the candida diet; generally don’t use the pulp unless you feel weak & shaky, it requires much more digestive effort, but also keeps you full for longer…
- molybdenum (mellows die off symptoms)
- multi vit, evening primrose oil, probio (I take that every day)
- 1 grapefruit
- detox brew or herbal tea
Choose any of the Ingredients below to make your Detox Brew:
- Red Clover
- Juniper Berries
- Dandelion Leaf
- Yellow Dock
- Golden Seal
- Mullein
- Burdock Root
- Horsetail
- Buchu
- Uva Ursi
- Cornsilk
- Nettle
Note:
I used all of them, but that’s overkill. Good ones to have I’d say are Dandelion leaf and Nettle tea. If you can get hold of Uva Ursi leaves, great. But don’t sweat it, if you don’t.
If you do get Yellow Dock or Burdock Root you’ll need to set the herbs soaking in cold water over night before you simmer them for 15-20 mins. If you just have the loose tea leaves then prepare them like a normal tea in the morning. My tea brew tasted horrible, it had a distinct earthy mushroomy smell, beh! So I added cloves and cinnamon the next day, which disguised it a little bit.
For more tips on how to brew your own detox tea or make healing poultices and tinctures I recommend http://healingtools.tripod.com/thn8.html. A fantastic free resource – I couldn’t have done my liver cleanse without it! Particularly valuable if you have to do the detox on a shoestring and you can’t afford expensive formulas.
Where to Buy Detox Teas from?
- I bought the tea ingredients and herbs at Woodland Herbs UK online.
- A good US alternative is mountain rose herbs.
Broth Recipe: (adapted from J.Barron’s site above)
Boil the peel of 4 potatoes, 4 chopped carrots, 2 onions, 3 leeks, 6 cloves of garlic (he suggests 50!) and some beetroot & leaves for 20 minutes then strain – tastes sweet, not my thing. High in potassium though.
Mid Morning:
Big glass of water with Clay & linseed tabs (alternative: Psyllium husks)
Lunchtime:
- liver tincture (if using)
- 30 drops of wormwood complex (if using)
- Molybdenum (to minimize die off)
- Broth or diluted Veggy juice (on first and last day you can have salad or steamed veg)
- detox brew or herbal tea
Afternoon:
Big glass of water with Clay & linseed tabs (alternative: Psyllium husks)
Evening:
- liver tincture (if using)
- 30 drops of wormwood complex (if using – it’s an antifungal/ parasite cleanse; if you’re not using it I suggest taking garlic)
- Molybdenum (if using)
- Broth or diluted Veggy Juice (on first and last day you can have salad or steamed veg, no dressing)
- detox brew or herbal tea
2 hours later: Big glass of water with Clay & linseed tabs (alternative: Psyllium husks) with Cascara & Chamomile/ and or Barberry capsules – to keep things moving
Notes:
- 1-3 days of detox are perfect. There’s no reason to do it for longer. So don’t force it, especially not if you have lots to do.
- If you are unused to fasting, if your schedule is tough and you have an uncontrollable desire to eat something, or you feel lightheaded or very weak, then have some pureed veggy soup, avocado or cucumber.
- If you are virtually candida free and it agrees with you then you could add a little bit of fruit to your veggy juices when you feel that your mood is fluctuating massively or you have a meeting, etc. But be careful not to provoke a candida relapse.
- Chlorella and/ or Spirulina is useful to boost energy levels – I either mixed it into my veggy juices (with limited success flavour wise) or drank it diluted with water. Sometimes I also added lemon and barley grass powder and rosehip like in the photo.
Top Tip: Use a jam jar with lid to mix green superfoods or protein powder concoctions. The powder dissolves better when shaken. Especially if you have added slippery elm & marshmellow powder like I used to do to heal my Leaky Gut Syndrom.
- Camomile Tea is also soothing. Drink plenty of water, get some fresh air and do something calm and relaxing.
Also Recommended: Enemas 2-3 times a week, preferably on the first day, best in the morning after bowel movement
Another thing to bear in mind is that the original liver detox ala Barron suggests to take 1 more tbsp olive oil and 1 more clove of garlic a day, so by day 5 you take 5 each. I stuck to 1. No idea how that affected the cleanse.
What To Eat After the Detox:
It’s best to slowly transition yourself back to normal eating. Start with cooked brown rice with cinnamon if you are at the beginning of the candida diet. If you are in phase 3 then you can have oat porridge or a gluten free alternative with rice milk.
Veggy soup, brown rice and steamed vegetables are ideal, and you could have a boiled egg.
Eat smaller portions than you normally would and take your time to chew and appreciate. Go easy on salads, fatty foods and meats.
What You Will Achieve:
- You’ll eliminate a lot of toxic residue and yeast overgrowth.
- You’ll cleanse your urinary system and rested your liver reducing your fat and additives intake.
- You’ll give your entire digestive system a holiday from processing protein.
- You’ll shorten the food transit time which lessens your chance of illnesses.
How You’ll Feel:
After the liver cleanse you should feel lighter & healthier with a sense of achievement, and your metabolism will be working much more efficient.
And if you don’t achieve your goals this time round, don’t feel guilty. Adapt the detox to your situation. Maybe do a soup day or veg day instead, or eat lots of salads, hummus and rice if you have sports activities planned or other commitments.
The idea should always be to empower you and make you stronger. To nourish, not to starve. Hey, we don’t want you to waste away
So, take great care when embarking on a detox and perhaps consult a physician or nutritionist beforehand. And let us know in the FB group how you are getting on.
Liver Cleanse Review – So How Did My Cleanse Go?
I was glad that I had done a few days of Colon Cleansing beforehand so I didn’t feel starving, and I had hardly any die off symptoms, which surprised me. I went into the cleanse unprepared (no veg in the house!) and super stressed due to work commitments. So much so in fact that I had to adapt my liver cleanse plan to include smoothies and juices to see me through the day while I was working.
Like this one for instance – my favourite juice of all time – Carrot, Apple, Celery & Ginger Juice – Yummo!!!
I really thought I had blown it all by working like a lunatic (didn’t go to bed until 2am each night) and drinking stuff containing oodles of fruit sugar. Be that as it may – I really do feel better than before the cleanse – despite of myself
It just goes to show that you can achieve an enormous amount of healing just from following the candida diet, without any regular fasting.
So, there is hope, people! You can heal Candida.
Just keep doing more healthy things than unhealthy, and you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
Even if you have setbacks, even if you succumbed to sweets at Christmas, even if you have a drink once in a while, and even if you live a totally hectic lifestyle. I have done all those things, and my health still has improved despite of all of that.
I still have to tread very carefully not to get a relapse though. Soon I can hopefully start experimenting with re-introducing suspect foods like cheese and yeasty bread.
Now that’ll be something!
All I’m saying is, don’t beat yourself up that your recovery is not going fast enough. The harder you try, the further it seems to slip away from you. YOU ARE HEALING!
Hold onto that thought and keep marching forward. One day at a time.
ONE more thing: Candida Cleanse Insider Advice – To Fully Heal Your Candida Issues These Natural Remedies Are Indispensable:
Ssssh… top secret… it took me years to figure these tricks out through trial & error
- Uva Ursi is fantastic to treat and prevent candida re-infections in the bladder
- Yogurt tampons are essential to stop thrush
- Acv washes help to prevent infections in the bum & nether regions
- To maximise the cleansing effect enemas are needed
- Slippery Elm & Marshmallow powder is fabulous to heal abdominal pain, bloating and leaky gut/ IBS type symptoms
The uti tea is awesome. I wish I had known about it when I first started my candida diet. It would have shaved months of my recovery time. It’s that good.
Same applies to the Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Powder – I can’t believe how many nights I suffered from a painfully inflamed gut/ belly before I tried this stuff, which worked for me within a couple of weeks!
I should perhaps mention though that at the same time I had stopped eating dairy, wheat and gluten, to give my intestines the best chances to heal once and for all. I haven’t had a bloated belly since, not even after overindulging at Christmas.
