5 Seasoning Ideas for Candida Sufferers

candida diet seasonings

How can you season food to make it taste great – especially fish and chicken?

Do you find Candida Diet meals a bit bland? You are not alone!

When I started the diet I was surprised how boring and “same old – same old” everything tasted.

No wonder, considering that cheese, cream, soya sauce and most other seasonings (with sugar, malt, citric acid, vinegar…) are off the books while you are fighting candida.

  • Another good option is to use Indian spices in your cooking. They have a wonderfully invigorating and health boosting effect on your body and are also very flavoursome.

That said, you should use the spices sparingly, only to accentuate.

Red hot chillies for instance, beside making your food acidic and hard to digest, would also kill all the friendly organisms in your gut. That’s bad news if you are taking expensive probiotics to re-populate this very area.

My Staple Spice Mixture for Marinating Chicken or Fish:

This base sauce is very versatile. It works when you fry foods just as well as a salad sauce (with a dash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice).

  • olive oil
  • low salt or sea salt
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • cayenne pepper
  • tumeric (kurkuma)
  • crushed garlic or garlic granules
  • ginger spice

Sometimes I also add some roasted cumin and fennel seeds to minimize bloating or a dash of apple cider vinegar to tenderize meat. If you do this a few hours or the night before you cook the meal, then this really brings out the aromatic flavours of the spices.

Adding fresh or dried herbs is also a good idea, especially Thyme and Rosemary – these not only fend off candida but they also add a nice aroma to your dishes.
Also try roasting some sesame seeds or sunflower and pumpkin seeds with salt and pepper and then sprinkling them over your food for added crunch & spice factor.

Or my personal favourite: ground almonds or desiccated coconut – tastes heavenly when roasted and added to stews, soups or curries!!!

Spice Mix for Seasoning Eggs:

Mild onions fried in the spice mix above make a tasty base for a vegetable gravy that works well with chicken, eggs or veggy burgers.

Leave out the garlic though – eggs and garlic are highly acidic and best eaten with vegetables. When preparing scrambled eggs or fried eggs you can also add some dark mustard seeds or a bit of salted butter (not ideal I know, but enjoyed in moderation it still remains a very good flavour enhancer.

Sometimes I add a few rashers of grilled bacon – Goodness gracious me, first the butter and then bacon!? At least it’s lean un-smoked organic bacon, hey ?

Turns a simple vegetable stir-fry or egg based dish into a complete meal. If you are vegetarian or vegan then I guess marinated tofu or spiced chickpeas/ beans would be your equivalent.

Simple Aromatic Tomato Sauce for Beans, Potato & Pasta dishes:

I very often make a quick tomato sauce from tomato puree, a dash of water or mild semi skimmed goats milk, garlic, salt and pepper. This works nicely with beans, potato and pasta, too.

Adding fresh herbs like basil is a bonus, but not essential.

What to use for thickening soups & sauces:

Ground arrow root is great to thicken up soups. And you can create a nice sauce to go with various things by blending fried onions or mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables with a touch of spice and semi-skimmed goats milk or broth.

Vegan Sauce:

  • 3 Tbsp chickpea flour (besan/ garbanzo beans)
  • dash of olive oil
  • 1 yeast free veggie stock cube
  • 1 1/4 cups unsweetened soy milk or rice milk
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • optional: 1 tsp Braggs Liquid Aminos

I hope this has given you a few ideas how you can season your foods whilst you are following the candida diet.
